2022 Jeep Compass Review, Specs, and Pricing The 2022 Jeep Compass for sale is a compact crossover that enjoys the brand's rugged cachet and can be outfitted to actually excel off-road. It fills the space between the smaller Renegade and the slightly larger Cherokee and competes against alternatives such as the Mazda CX-5 and Toyota RAV4. While we've derided the Compass's unremarkable interior in the past, its cabin now has a fresher aesthetic with more modern features. Its apathetic four-cylinder gas engine is also a point of contention, but the possibility of a new plug-in hybrid would give the lineup a powertrain that's becoming more common in this segment. Of course, Jeep's image is based on getting off the beaten path, and the Trailhawk trim is the best equipped to accomplish that. The Cherokee may offer even more capability, but the 2022 Compass is arguably prettier and more affordable. What's New for 2022? For the 2022 model, Jeep is giving the Compass lineup a host of updates that make it more desirable. Along with a revised front end that looks more upscale, its interior benefits from a new dashboard design and a new tablet-style touchscreen infotainment system with the latest Uconnect software. A new Compass Latitude Lux trim level is now available and comes standard with all-wheel drive, a leather interior, and the new larger touchscreen. The lineup could also add a plug-in hybrid that uses the 4xe (pronounced four by E) moniker. Those who want all-wheel drive, which trades the standard six-speed automatic for a nine-speed, will spend an extra $1500. Along with the Cold Weather package (heated front seats and steering wheel, remote start, and more), we'd choose the Advance Safety and Safety and Security packages. The latter brings a mix of blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beams, and more. Engine, Transmission, and Performance The four-cylinder engine that powers every Compass is lethargic, and the optional nine-speed automatic transmission is slow to execute shifts. All front-wheel models are equipped with a six-speed automatic. Buyers who choose all-wheel drive will enjoy a variety of terrain-conquering drive modes. An automatic setting allows the car to direct torque to the wheels as it sees fit, while Snow, Sand, and Mud modes allow varying amounts of wheelspin for improved traction. Trailhawk models add a low "crawler" gear ratio and a Rock mode, which keeps the Compass in first gear and directs torque only to the wheels that can find grip. The Compass feels more agile than its tall, boxy profile would suggest, responding ably to inputs from the nicely weighted steering wheel. There is some lean during tight cornering, but overall the Compass feels well-controlled, solidly planted, and capable on the road. An off-road course we braved when we first drove the Compass revealed that it can hold its own at least over moderate obstacles, and we noticed nary a stumble from the all-wheel-drive system. The potential 4xe plug-in hybrid will offer an eco-friendly alternative to the regular gas-powered variants. However, we haven't driven or tested that version yet. Get Pre-Approved Schedule Test Drive Value Your Trade Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG Despite running in a class with several smaller vehicles—including some that are only available with front-wheel drive—the Compass is about as efficient as most competitors. The estimates the Compass will earn up to 22 mpg city and 31 highway. If a plug-in-hybrid variant joins the lineup, it will likely get the best gas mileage, and it should also provide a short all-electric driving range. The last gas-fed model we ran on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy route, which is part of our extensive testing regimen, returned 29 mpg. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo With an attractive dashboard and improved features, the 2022 Compass looks to be an improvement versus the previous model year, which was plagued by nondescript styling and unremarkable interior materials. Plus, its interior is comfortable, functional, and has enough space for four adult passengers. The back seat is neither the largest nor the smallest of the crossovers in this diverse class. We still like to think the Jeep Compass has spacious front and rear seats for all to enjoy. Its high seat bottoms in the back seat mean that passengers' legs are fully supported, and even long rides can be comfortable. Despite its boxy exterior and what at first appears to be competitive cargo volume, the Compass is not the roomiest of its set. It has enough luggage space for an airport run but long trips could be a squeeze. The rear seatbacks angle slightly upward when folded, and the last Compass we tested held only 17 carry-on suitcases with the seats stowed. The new 2022 Jeep® Compass' horizontal interior theme is emphasized by a bold Gloss Black center stack that positions either an 8.4-inch or new 10.1-inch (shown) high-definition touchscreen. The 10.1-inch touchscreen, standard on the Latitude LUX, Trailhawk and Limited models, is encapsulated in a bonded glass lens for a seamless, high-tech appearance. All screens prominently display the next-generation Uconnect 5 system and are positioned in the center of the instrument panel to be even more accessible to the driver. Infotainment and Connectivity With the latest Uconnect 5 software and a slick tablet-like touchscreen, the 2022 Compass has a thoroughly modern infotainment system. The standard touchscreen measures 8.4 inches, and a larger 10.1-inch unit is also available. Along with natural voice recognition and navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration are offered on the Compass. 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Review, Pricing, and Specs When you close your eyes and think of a Jeep, it's likely that the rough-and-tumble Wrangler comes to mind, but the Grand Cherokee is every bit as important to the success of the famed off-road brand in terms of sales. Its appeal is bolstered by the fact that it pairs impressive off-road capability with on-road refinement; offers lots of available luxury appointments and features; and has the rugged, outdoorsy look Jeep buyers love. For the 2021 model year, Jeep launched a new generation of the Grand Cherokee but offered the new model only as a the L three-row variant (reviewed separately) alongside the previous generation two-row GC. For the 2022 model year, the Grand Cherokee sheds the old-gen model with the introduction of a two-row body style riding atop the new architecture. What's New for 2022? The two-row Grand Cherokee transitions to a more modern design that's shared with the three-row L variant that launched for the 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee model. The Limited model represents the best mix of features for the price and upgrade the base Laredo with enough equipment to satisfy luxury buyers. The Limited comes standard with leather upholstery, a power operated rear liftgate, heated front and rear seats, interior ambient lighting, and much more. Engine, Transmission, and Performance Like the last generation Grand Cherokee, the new one is powered by your choice of either a 3.6-liter V-6 or a 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 engine. Jeep is also preparing to drop its plug-in hybrid 4Xe powertrain into the Grand Cherokee to offer electrification for the first time in its family SUV. Rear-wheel drive will likely continue to be offered as standard, but this being a Jeep, several different all-wheel drive systems are optional. It also boasts a whopping 390 pound feet torque. A Trailhawk model with more-robust off-road equipment and rough-country capability is all but a certainty, although Jeep has not mentioned such a variant just yet. When we get a chance to test the new Grand Cherokee at our test track, we'll update this story with results. On the performance end of the spectrum, we expect Jeep to continue to offer high performance SRT and Trackhawk models, but we review those separately. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG Fuel economy estimates haven't been released for the new Grand Cherokee yet, but we aren't expecting much to change. The current Grand Cherokee is rated as high as 26 mpg highway for rear-wheel drive V-6 models and as low as 14 mpg city for the all-wheel drive V-8 model. The plug-in hybrid 4Xe should deliver better fuel economy but we'll have to wait for additional details regarding that powertrain. While base Laredo models will likely offer the essentials, upscale Summit and Overland trims will add luxuries like quilted leather upholstery, open-pore wood trim, and high-tech digital displays. We haven't had a chance to test the new Grand Cherokee yet, but we expect it to accommodate more of our carry-on suitcases than the previous generation model. Infotainment and Connectivity We haven't seen the inside of the 2022 Grand Cherokee yet, but we expect it to be nearly identical to the 2021 Grand Cherokee L. Of course, those who want an even mightier large luxury SUV should direct their attention towards the 483-hp Mercedes-Benz GLS580 or the 523-hp X7 BMW M50i. As with its domestic rivals, the Grand Wagoneer utilizes body-on-frame underpinnings, in this case derived from the Ram 1500 pickup truck. However, the Jeep features an independent rear suspension rather than the truck's solid rear axle, which should give the SUV a smoother ride and better handling. Along with several four-wheel-drive systems, the Grand Wagoneer offers an adaptive air suspension that can raise its ride height up to 3.6 inches or lower it by a half inch. It also boasts 10 inches of ground clearance, up to two feet of water-fording capability, and a max tow rating of 9860 pounds. The main focus is the center stack, which packs a 12.0-inch center touchscreen that sits above a 10.3-inch touchscreen with controls for the HVAC system. Starting on the Series II, there's yet another 10.3-inch touchscreen for the front-seat passenger.
